Expressions of interest are sought for four volunteer Board members with substantial experience and knowledge in either (1) Corporate Governance and Secretariat work (note – we employ a minute secretary) or (2) Treasurer or (3) Marketing & Business Development or (4) Community Development and / or Arts Management or (5) Architecture/Town Planning or (6) Accounting and/or Law or (7) Project Management. Applicants eligible to apply for appointment as a Board member must have no less than five years in their relevant field of expertise. Our aim is for our Board members to possess personal qualities such as integrity, fairness, maturity, sound temperament and commitment to community service.
Appointees also need to be aware of, and sensitive to, the diversity of backgrounds and life experiences of, and the need to communicate effectively and courteously with all stakeholders. A commitment to the use of technology and to participation in ongoing professional education relevant to this Board position, an interest in the Arts and experience in property management and not-for-profit organisations will also be viewed favourably. Appointees are preferably located in the Hobsons Bay municipality or nearby.
make a minimum commitment of 3 years, attend Board meetings every second month for up to 3 hours, participate in a Board sub-committee which meets monthly for 1 to 2 hours, and attend a Strategic Planning Day on a Saturday in March. Preferably directors will be residents of Hobsons Bay or nearby municipalities, who can attend board meetings and gallery exhibitions in person.
The Hobsons Bay Community Advancement Co-operative (HBCAC) is a community owned and operated not-for-profit organisation (governed in accordance with the Co-Operatives National Law) and a registered charity, with DGR status, registered on the Register of Cultural Organisations (ROCO). HBCAC owns the site located at 5 Sargood Street in the heart of Altona. It has operated the Louis Joel Arts & Community Centre (LJACC), including the Joel Gallery, for 20+ years. LJACC is a dynamic and multi-functional meeting place that provides community programs supporting arts and cultural services and promotes community participation, connectivity and wellbeing. Programs are diverse and support a wide variety of recipients. In addition, the Hobsons Bay Endoscopy Centre is our major tenant.
This is a unique opportunity for you to meet and network with like-minded individuals who share a passion and belief in the restorative benefit of participation in the Arts. This is also a fantastic opportunity to gain experience in strategy, corporate governance or finance. Board members work with you to ensure you make an impact and truly care about your professional and personal development. Prior to being appointed to the Board, you will be assigned to at least one of the Board sub-committees, for a period of 3 months. This gives you the opportunity to get to know the work of the Board and other Board members.
Extensive experience in Corporate Governance and Secretariat work, Marketing & Business Development, Partnerships or Community & Arts Management or Architecture and/ or Town Planning or Accounting and/or Law or Project Management.
Ability to commit a minimum of 3 hours on a weekly basis (12 hours per month)
